FAQ

Do I need my own kayak and other gear?

If you have your own kayaking gear in good condition and would like to use it, great! If not, we will provide you with the “Big Five” necessary pieces of equipment for whitewater paddling: kayak, paddle, helmet, PFD (lifejacket), and spray skirt. Please keep in mind that these items are whitewater-specific and a PFD used on a lake, for example, is not the same as one used on the river.

How should I dress on the river?

A drytop, drysuit, or wetsuit is essential for staying warm on the river. It’s always easy to cool off! We have “Farmer John” wetsuits available to borrow. Layers are key on the river, as well as keeping at least one dry backup. Wool and synthetic fibers such as polar fleece, capeline, or polypro are the best fabric choices. This is true for socks and underwear as well. No cotton, as that will only keep you wetter and colder! Lightweight, closed-toed shoes are recommended, shoes that will stay on your feet (not flip-flops) are required.

What else should I bring on the river?

A water bottle is a must! Water-resistant sunscreen and SPF lip balm will keep your face happy. Sunglasses with a retention strap will protect light-sensitive eyes. Please bring with you any necessary medications, such as an asthma inhaler or epi-pen, which your instructor will carry in her dry bag if you don’t have your own.

How much should I tip my instructor?

Gratuities are appreciated and accepted as a thank-you to instructors if you feel they have done an exceptional job. General guidelines are 10%-20% of the trip cost, though ultimately it’s dependent upon your personal satisfaction and financial means.

What should I bring for camping?

A tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat are necessary camping items. We have camping gear for rental as well, please let us know in advance if you need. Warm, comfortable clothes for the evening and a flashlight or headlight are also essential.
